Genesis

In this series we're going to see what the beginning of scripture has to tell us about the beginning of life as we know it. As we explore some of the foundational stories in Genesis, we'll also see what these stories teach us about Jesus, and how he's been a part of creation's story from the beginning.

We moved into Genesis 6-9 to see the story of Noah and what happened through the flood. From this historical account we realize this truth - the judgement of God is inevitable, but the grace of God is available.

As we dive into the life of Abraham we will see his call from God and the covenant God made with him. As Abraham chose to put his faith in God, that faith produced an obedience that opened the door for God to work not just for Abraham but for generations to come. Your faith in Christ produces obedience in you that will open a door for God to work through you.

September 10, 2023

This week we move into Genesis 18-19 and see the account of Abraham and Lot’s interaction with God’s angelic servants, We also see Abraham’s intercession and God’s judgement of Sodom & Gomorrah. It’s a reminder to us that the judgment of God is inevitable. But just like we learned with Noah, God’s grace is available and the prayers of the righteous are effectual.

Genesis 22 shares the difficult story of Abraham and Isaac, and Abraham’s charge from God to sacrifice his son. Why would God ask such a thing? Why would Abraham obey? What happened in the end? This account teaches us that our complete trust in God as our provider is revealed through our complete surrender to God’s plan.

The story of Genesis transitions from Abraham to Isaac. As we dive into Isaac’s family we see that everything isn’t perfect, in fact it’s dangerously divisive. What we learn from Isaac, Rebekah, Esau and Jacob is that when we go our own way we pay a great price, but when we surrender to God we receive a great reward.

Jacob is now front and center in the book of Genesis, and as we follow Jacob’s journey of finding love, establishing a family and dealing with his extended family and in-laws we learn another truth. You cannot fulfill the longings of your soul outside of the creator of your soul. Your soul begins to be fulfilled when you begin to praise your creator.

We continue looking at Jacob’s journey. As Jacob moves forward he finds himself in a wrestling match with God. This week we discover this truth - we prevail through persistent prayer and trusting the providence of God.

As we conclude our exploration of the book of Genesis, we conclude with the life of Joseph. Throughout these final 14 chapters of the book we see an overall theme that challenges us with this thought - Living with the awareness that God is always with you will change the way you see everything in life.
